In 2022, my mother was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and had an operation. The guilt of not being able to take care of her and the fear of the possibility of losing someone I love made me completely lost. Since then, and still today, I have spent much time thinking about death in daily life and started to focus on things that I hadn’t noticed before. In particular, l always walk past the Jacques Cœur Palace on my way to school and there are sculptures of faces on the façade of the palace. They too would have been someone’s loved ones in the past, but now they’re dead and no longer here. Every time I see them, I think of the fear of death and the tremendous pain and sadness that my mother’s death will bring me in the future.

We are afraid of things we don't understand, and death is one of them. To overcome this fear, I tried to expose myself to things that reminded me of death, hoping that eventually, the fear would subside. The result was an installation that evokes the sentiment of death through visuals and sounds. The installation features videos that play continuously, with faces reciting Korean poems related to the theme of death. Candles and a skeleton, commonly used in painting as metaphors for death, are also included. The installation creates a melancholic atmosphere with bare branches swaying in the wind. I had the opportunity to showcase three installations, including this, in a solo exposition titled “La vie, la mort, éternellement” (Life, Death, Eternally) at the Jacques Cœur Palace.
