Film photographs on salt prints

Variable dimensions

This work is a series of photographs taken in the Burren region of Ireland and printed using the salt-printing process, an early photographic technique employing salt and silver nitrate.

Once covered by the sea, the Burren still preserves marine traces within its limestone rocks and landscape. The choice of salt-printing extends this connection to the site. Much like walking, the process is slow and repetitive, privileging time and the gradual emergence of the image rather than an immediate result.

Throughout the making of this work, the landscape revealed itself in an ambiguous way. From a distance, the images appeared almost abstract; up close, they disclosed a multitude of strange and organic details. Once printed, the photographs took on an uncertain form, somewhere between painting and photography, reinforcing the impression of a landscape that is both real and elusive.
